An international team of four authors, led by distinguished philosopher of science, Nancy Cartwright, and leading scholar of the Vienna Circle, Thomas E. Uebel, have produced this lucid and elegant study of a much-neglected figure. The book, which depicts Neurath's science in the political, economic and intellectual milieu in which it was practised, is divided into three sections: Neurath's biographical background and the socio-political context of his economic ideas; the development of his theory of science; and his legacy as illustrated by his contemporaneous involvement in academic and political debates. Coinciding with the renewal of interest in logical positivism, this is a timely publication which will redress a current imbalance in the history and philosophy of science, as well as making a major contribution to our understanding of the intellectual life of Austro-Germany in the inter-war years

Otto Neurath war eines "der am meisten vernachlässigten Genies des 20. Jahrhunderts", so der amerikanische Kulturhistoriker William Johnston. Was und wer Otto Neurath (1882 bis 1945) wirklich war, das beantwortet der Historiker Günther Sandner in der ersten umfassenden Biografie über den vielseitigen Ökonomen, der auch als Aufklärer, Sozialist, Utopist, als prägender Graphikdesigner, Museumsdirektor, Filmemacher wirkte und als der "witzigste Mann von Wien" galt. Zusammengehalten wurden diese Teile seines Lebens von seinem politischen Engagement. Mit seinen Piktogrammen, die Neurath im Exil weiterentwickelte, hinterließ dieser unorthodoxe Intellektuelle der Nachwelt eine bis heute internationale Bildsprache

'Ab Mitte der 1920er-Jahre entwickelte der Soziologe und Ökonom Otto Neurath (1882 bis 1945) die Wiener Methode der Bildstatistik, die insbesondere in der Zeit seiner Emigration (1934 bis 1945) zu einer umfassenden Bildpädagogik erweitert wurde und unter dem Namen Isotype (International System of Typographic Picture Education) auch internationale Dimension erlangte. Das Ziel, diese Bildersprache zu einem zentralen Instrument der interkulturellen Verständigung und Demokratisierung des Wissens zu machen, wurde jedoch nur zum Teil erreicht. Der Beitrag gibt einen Überblick zur Geschichte der Neurathschen Bildpädagogik, erläutert die Besonderheiten von Isotype und der bildstatistischen Methode und versucht, deren aktuelle Bedeutung zu bestimmen. Drei Gründe werden schließlich dafür genannt, warum nur eingeschränkt von einem nachhaltigen Erfolg von Neuraths Bemühungen gesprochen werden kann: die enge Koppelung des Projekts an seine Person, der veränderte mediale, gesellschaftliche und politische Kontext, sowie ein zu wenig differenziertes Verständnis der Kontextualität und Manipulierbarkeit von Bildern.' Als Pionier der Visuellen Kommunikation hat Otto Neurath (1882-1945) grundlegende Ideen zur modernen Gestaltung von Bildstatistik entwickelt. Politik und Wirtschaft, aber auch Wissenschaft in einer Medienmoderne, die neue Visualitäten erlaubt, verlangen nach einer Bildersprache, die veränderten Ansprüchen und neuen Belangen genügt: Eine Gesellschaft, die sich in der globalen Medienkultur zunehmend visuell organisiert, braucht nicht nur Fotos, Filme und Illustrationen, sondern vor allem auch: Sachbilder, diagrammatische Darstellung und Verdeutlichung. Die Beiträge in diesem Band erforschen die Dimension der posttypografischen Form (Frank Hartmann), der soziologischen Grafik (Benjamin Benus), der Kartierung von Stadt (Sophie Hochhäusl), der Siedlungsbewegung (Nader Vossoughian), der Infografik im Film (Alexander Schwinghammer), der gesellschaftlichen Relevanz und Evidenz von Infografiken (Yuri Engelhardt, Rolf F. Nohr) sowie der Lehren, die aus dem Isotype-System gezogen werden können (Robin Kinross). Mit zwei Originaltexten von Otto Neurath ("Das Sachbild", 1930 und "Statistische Hieroglyphen", 1926) und zahlreichen Abbildungen.

"Das Verhältnis von Wissenschaft und Öffentlichkeit war ein zentrales Thema in Otto Neuraths Werk. Als Arbeiterbildner, Museumsdirektor und pädagogischer Erneuerer war die Auseinandersetzung mit diesem Thema für ihn auch eine Art Selbstreflexion. In diesem intellektuellen Prozess modifizierte er sein Verständnis von Demokratie und von seiner Rolle als Gelehrter und wissenschaftlicher Experte. Die Ausarbeitung seines politischen Projektes 'Demokratisierung des Wissens' beinhaltete auch einen kritischen Ansatz zur Rolle von Experten in politischen Kommunikations- und Entscheidungsprozessen. Der Beitrag diskutiert zunächst die Frage, ob Neurath als politischer Intellektueller gesehen werden kann. In diesem Zusammenhang werden die verschiedenen Phasen seines wissenschaftlichen Lebens gestreift um aufzuzeigen, dass er sowohl seine politische Rolle als auch sein politisches Selbstverständnis mehrfach änderte. Danach wird das zentrale politische Projekt - die Demokratisierung des Wissens - analysiert und historisch rekonstruiert, um abschließend zu zeigen, dass Neuraths Ansatz an deliberative und reflexive Modelle der Demokratietheorie anschlussfähig ist." Otto Neurath's thought is located at the crossroads of some of the main problems faced in theshort 20th century. Most of them still reverberate strongly today. However, he's practically a stranger to many of our contemporaries in the social sciences. In this article, besides publishing this monographic, we explain his biography and main scientific and philosophic works and how they're connected with each other. Therefore, the main reason to modify this monographic around his thought is no other than to provoke a further reflection in the spanish language and around the intellectual legacy. This monographic is formed by four axes. The first one revolves around the interpretation of Neurath's position -as philosopher of science, critic of the inherited tradition- around the controversies of positivism and the critical theory. The second axis elaborates Neurath's imprint on the development of green economy, through the reading of his developments on the fiction of commensurability or economistic fetishism. Thirdly, concerning his work as a promoter of practices for the democratization of knowledge (mainly through the ISOTYPE system). Finally, we explore little-trodden paths about his reception in Spain, from the award-winning infographics section of the now vanished newspaper Público (in print) to the philosophy of Francisco Fernández Buey and Manuel Sacristán. ; El pensamiento de Otto Neurath se sitúa en la encrucijada de algunos de los principales problemas que atraviesan el corto siglo xx. La mayor parte aún resuenan con fuerza en la actualidad. Sin embargo, es prácticamente un desconocido para muchos de nuestros coetáneos en las ciencias sociales. En este artículo, además de presentar el monográfico, explicamos cómo se conectan la biografía y sus principales proyectos científicos y filosóficos. Así pues, el principal motivo para editar este monográfico alrededor de su pensamiento no es otro que provocar una mayor reflexión en lengua castellana en torno a su legado intelectual. Cuatro ejes componen este monográfico. El primereje discurre sobre la interpretación del lugar de Neurath —como filósofo de la ciencia crítico de la tradición heredada— en torno a las controversias del positivismo y la teoría crítica. Un segundo eje reflexiona a propósito de la impronta de Neurath en el desarrollo de la economía ecológica, a través de la lectura de sus desarrollos sobre la ficción de la conmensurabilidad o del fetichismo economicista. El tercero atiende a su labor como impulsor de prácticas para la democratización del conocimiento (principalmente a través del sistema ISOTYPE). Por último, se exploran caminos poco transitados sobre su recepción en España, de la premiada sección de infografía del desaparecido diario Público (en papel) a la filosofía de Francisco Fernández Buey y Manuel Sacristán.
